Stephen Curry easily won the MVP award for a reason. He averaged 23.8 points and set the NBA record for 3-pointers in a season with 286. Curry's play also helped the Golden State Warriors get the best record in the NBA. His MVP-quality play has carried over to the playoffs where he is averaging 31.4 points and 7.2 assists.
Curry has put together a special season and the MVP award was well deserved but while Tony Allen may agree, he doesn't think Steph's game is that unique.
From CSN Bay Area:
"I don't get a vote, but I acknowledge his MVP status," Tony Allen said after practice on Monday. "It's well deserved, I wasn't surprised."
"He can shoot the ball pretty good and he got a nice handle," Allen said when asked what makes Curry special. "But it ain't nothing I ain't never seen before."
Allen has played basketball for most of his life, so he probably has seen players similar to Curry at some point. But even though Allen uses a quadruple-negative, it is strange that he is downplaying Curry's game. Especially after Curry scored 22 points (including four three-pointer), dished out seven assists and had moves like this in Game 1:
Since he is one of the best defenders in the league, Allen was tasked with mainly guarding Klay Thompson in Game 1 but with Mike Conley still being questionable for Game 2, he may have to guard Curry for a significant amount of time as Nick Calathes and Beno Udrih were ineffective in trying to slow down the MVP.
With Game 2 tipping off tonight, we'll see if Curry is able to do something that Allen has "never seen before."
