Bulls' Butler on contract: 'I think we both won'

Chicago Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler bet on himself when electing to play out the 2014-2015 season rather than signing a contract extension. The reported offer was four years and $40-44 million, and now he's in line for the max as a restricted free agent. Butler became an All-Star this year, and then he won Most Improved Player. After he officially received the award, he told reporters that both sides are pleased with how things played out.

From USA Today:

So, who won the bet?

"Do I feel like I won the bet? It's a tie. I think we both won," Butler said. "I did my job and what I was supposed to do, and I think they are happy with where I am right now."

Butler stated his intention to remain a Bull, too.

"This is a place for me. I love playing with the guys that we have," he said. "They continue to bring in great, high character guys that fit the team role. I love it here. I'm happy to be here."

It's been clear for months that Butler would end up with a massive raise, and a report in January indicated that the Bulls would be willing to pay up. Since then, Butler's been annoyed with having to answer questions about his future. He averaged 20 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game this season, becoming a far more complete and confident offensive player while remaining one of the best defenders in the league. At 25 years old, with a reputation as a hard worker, Chicago's front office would be insane to even consider letting him go.

As for who actually won the bet, it's clearly Butler. You have to wonder whether the Bulls might have been able to lock him up for something less than the max in October. Back then, Butler was primed for his breakout, but the former No. 30 overall pick couldn't have known he'd have a season quite like this.

Chicago has an opportunity to take a commanding 3-1 series lead against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. Butler will once again be matched up with LeBron James.
