NBA names Wolves F Wiggins Rookie of Year

The NBA selected Timberwolves forward Andrew Wiggins as its Rookie of the Year for the 2014-15 season, the league announced.

Wiggins received 110 of the 130 first-place votes. Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic received the second most first-place votes with 14.

By winning the award, Wiggins became the first Tmberwolves player to be named the Rookie of the Year.

"It means a lot to me and I know it means a lot to the team to be the first one to win this award," Wiggins said.

Wiggins was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2014 draft. He led all rookies in scoring with 16.9 points per game, was fourth in steals (1.05) and fifth in rebounding (4.6). Wiggins was the only rookie and just one of 11 players to start all 82 games this season.

When the Timberwolves traded Kevin Love for Wiggins, coach Flip Saunders said the team was looking for a franchise player, which he said they accomplished.

"When we traded for Andrew Wiggins, we got that player," he said. "I think he answered his critics and those questions [with his performance]."
